Quote:
More than three years after launch, the PlayStation 3 is finally profitable, Sony's president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.

Speaking in a recent interview, Yoshida said Sony is finally making money on every PS3 sold - but there's no rush to bring the price down again.

"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," he told IGN. "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to."

Last month the platform holder began shipping consoles with 'smaller and more cost effective' graphics chips, which has obviously done it a massive favour.

According to Yoshida though, Sony is looking at replenishing 'empty' retail stock rather than introducing another price slash.

"When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand," he explained. "At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production."

"We have lots of great games coming out and innovations with Move and 3DTV, so we don't believe this is the time for us to think about a price drop," he said.

Yoshida said Sony may look at introducing additional console bundles - such as those including the PlayStation Move controller - in place of a lower price point.

Yes but they were probably profitable overall last year because of the license fee income. I read somewhere that they need around a dozen games sold to make up any losses on hardware for early adopters.

But Amnesia, the quote says that they now make money on every PS3 sold.

I think that is regardless of the income from other sources.

Yes they are now profitable on the hardware. The Wii was profitable on hardware from day one. Other income depends on the losses overall. Though as I said they were probably overall profitable because of the license fees last year, even with a loss on each device sold. Now that will not lower the overall profit, but add to it from now on.

That's because putting a gamecube in a different box wasn't that expensive...

GC

486MHz IBM Power PC
43MB total RAM
162MHz Nintendo/ArtX for graphics (later acquired by ATi)

Wii

729MHz IBM Power PC
88MB Main Memory
243MHz Hollywood ATI GPU

So the Wii is basically an overclocked GC

And the GameCube was good too - or at least Zelda was! :D

I think that it was a little more than that, but not a lot more. It was built to be profitable from day one and target new segment of the market.
