http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10462298.stmIt is good that they are doing this? But why cant they do this for calls as well? Both here and abroad?

I'm looking forward to the Android 2.2 upgrade for my phone. Apparently that will allow you to shut down any data transmittion (but allowing voice calls) so you can turn your phone on abroad without risking getting hammered with data charges.

I think they do if you ask them. I'm sure I used to have something similar with Vodafone. Have you asked?

In a lot of cases aren't you better off by buying a local SIM card and using it for calls etc (outside of the EU)?

I have a call limit with O2 £10 above my normal monthly fee. Never hit it yet. I asked about it with Tesco who I am moving to for the iPhone 4. They do not do it.

When I go anywhere to stay for a while I do that. You need an open phone though.

+1 I did that while I was in texas for eight weeks. What annoyed me was that it cost 5c (about 2 1/2" pence at the time) to text to a UK mobile. I costs about four times that from a UK mobile IN the UK.

Going back a good few years, some UK providers were routing UK landline calls via the USA because it was cheaper than routing them directly. Today, some providers route UK landline to UK mobile calls via Europe, because the termination fees are cheaper that way. It's a very peculiar game and the figures make no sense at all.

I want to see an end of termination fees then contracts could offer unlimited calls to any non premium rate number.
