A woman has been left with serious facial injuries after pouring just two drops of drain cleaner down her sink. If anyone out there is planning to do a bit of cleaning using 'Extreme Green's Dr Drain' do watch what you're doing! Not going to post the before and after pictures of her injuries here but they are a bit grim and she's lucky to have kept her sight, but that's what a face full of sulphuric acid will do. I'd have thought the 'Extreme' in the name of this product was a marketing gimmick but perhaps not. It's from the Daily Mail site so proceed at your own risk. Clicky |

2 drops and she gets a faceful, a bit of a contradiction and I suspect some other product must have been in the drain to get a violent reaction like that. However I hope she recovers soon. I've used sulphuric acid to clear drains before, wonderfully effective but it does need to be treated with respect. Certainly quicker and easier than other methods. |

two drops my arse!! Unless she had been using other products there is no way two drops can do that much damage. |

Being in her 70's won't have helped either, I'd imagine her skin would be rather more fragile than someone half her age. Either way, hope she's well soon. |

I did that in a Chemistry lesson, the beaker just got hotter and hotter and hotter. I got a detention. ![]() ![]() |

I got so many detentions in chemistry - I just couldn't resist. |

I remember some muppet in Chemistry A-level blowing up a beaker. We were making something close to TNT but not quite. Something to do with how a particular bond with benzene causes it to unlock other positions on the ring. Anyway, muppet added too much sulphuric acid and the beaker exploded and the top hit the ceiling, leaving a burn mark. What's more amazing is thag said muppet got an unconditional offer to oxbridge. |

I remember doing something similar - we had a dish of ethanol on fire, and we were told to throw some potassium permanganate crystals on there for a bit of fun. Nice big bangs, lots of flames and very enjoyable. Anyway, I put waaaay too much in and the dish tipped over with the first explosion - the subsequent explosions made a complete mess of everything in sight. I have no idea how it didn't hit someone and do quite serious damage. The only casualties were the desk, the wall next to me, the ceiling and my text books which my teacher ran over and threw over the flames. Four books and she didn't manage to cover the lot, she had to run and get the sand bucket. ![]() I got dragged into the HoD's office over that one. ![]() |

I remember looking at hexagonal close packing in a lesson. We were using natural gas from the bench taps bubbling through a detergent solution. The idea was to get the flow rate correct to get the smallest bubbles we could, and then burn them off if they were too large or inconsistent and filled the petri dish, and start again. I immediately saw the possibilities and created a mountain of bubbles across the bench. One humungous fireball shortly after resulted in another detention. ![]() Makes quite an interesting party trick. ![]() |

When my father was at school, they did make nitroglycerin in class! ![]() The P.E. teacher wasn't amused the next day, when he bowled a lovely fast ball, which hit exactly where they had buried the nitro and it make a huge hole in the middle of his pitch! (Not sure how they managed to bury it in the middle of the pitch and nobody noticed... ![]() |
