I'd like to know what they consider "acceptable" because 14K pa is a fair bit more than I'm spending

It would be interesting to see how they break it down.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I would say around £7,000 would do.
Then again, when I was working and earning £15,000 per annum everything was much more comfortable, I was able to put some money away to save and do pretty much anything I wanted...

It's roughly what I'm on. It's certainly sufficient, although a little tight when saving for wedding expenditures!

Bear in mind it does actually cost you money to work - transport costs, uniform wear & tear etc. What you could survive on if you didn't have a job is less than what it takes to survive when you do.

Ordinarily yes, however I know one person who works in a hotel here in Aber, he gets a room, three meals a day, a uniform provided, and still gets a decent wage. He's only an entry level employee too!

Yes but bear in mind that if you don't work you will need heating on in the winter. And energy has shot up in price. I would assume that the figure includes housing and is after tax.

It did say gross income, so presumably before tax.

I was living in Maidenhead, commuting to Gt. Portland Street and earning less than that. I struggled hugely to make ends meet, and relied a lot on the good will of my housemates. TBH, I'd have thought it would've been nearer £15k.

I should have double checked. Though I suppose at that level it will mean that they qualify for benefits such as working tax credit.

Were you paying rent from that? It's not at all clear to me if the £14K was supposed to include that, since it says "budget excluding rent and childcare". I think I live quite comfortably. Without including the mortgage, my annual outgoings are roughly: Council tax: £1200 Travel: £1000 Energy: £600 Water: £400 Internet: £200 Phone: £100 Food: £1200 Clothing: £50 Holidays: £250 Toys: £250 Drugs: £1000 Prostitutes: £1000 Total: £7250 That's for a 3 bedroom house with one person. Many of those costs would stay the same if I was married with 3 children. If I was on £14K and that didn't include rent, I'd probably have to cut back on the drugs and whores.
