Slower than expected uptake of digital radio means that AM and FM signals may not be turned off as early as planned.

In a speech later, communications minister Ed Vaizey is due to say that digital radio "is a huge opportunity" but that the transition cannot be imposed on "an unwilling public".

At the moment the radio industry is working towards a 2015 switchover.

But Mr Vaizey is to say a decision will be made when more than half of radio listeners have tuned into digital.

Latest figures from Rajar show that, in March 2010, 24% of all radio listening was digital, compared to 66% on AM or FM radio.

They need to start putting DAB radios in all news cars. There's still a lot that just have FM/AM.

I agree but what is the cost difference? I have two DAB radios already and use them all the time. I do not use my FM radios any longer, but still see a significant reason for the service to be left alone for now.

Including mine, and absolutely everyone I know... despite DAB being out for well over a decade :x

Hands up who has a digital radio in the car? If so, is it DAB+ compatible, or just DAB?

At home I don't use DAB at all, because I have Internet and Freeview radio. I do use FM though, because it's on both radio alarm clocks. Reception is useless though, so I often fail to wake up to the gentle hiss...

We've just bought a little Pure "Sensia" DAB radio for the office. It's surprisingly good for it's size. Just a shame we can't agree what to listen to.

I can't find any decent stations on it; there only seem to be about 20 and they're all pretty rubbish if you're looking for a music station. It does Internet too though, so maybe we can find something groovy from Mexico when we finally set it up...

Do a rescan and see if you can get BBC 6 Music.

+1

6 Music is about the only decent "popular" music station out there without incessant commercials. I'm looking at you, Absolute, the station formerly known as Virgin Radio.

I have the Pure Highway unit for in-car use. It broadcasts an FM signal to the in-car radio. To be honest, I don't use it as much as I thought I would, and the amount of cabling required is a bit of a pain. But it's also a battery-powered portable, which is handy if I want to listen to something when I'm pottering about the house.

No DAB in the car, and there is not likely to be so. The solutions at present are not good - and most seem to involve using a local FM transmitter so that the car radio can pick it up.

I rarely listen to the radio during the day. We have a DAB radio, but it’s elsewhere. There is something about the radio that annoys me at the moment - I think it’s the inane prattle from the over inflated egos of the presenters, interruptions over music and so on. I really would just have music playing.

I used to work in an environment where the radio was on all the time, and I really, truly hated it. I started wearing headphones.

I use DAB for Radio 4 and BBC 7 mainly.

Another reason to question DAB:

If you set your clock from the BBC 'pips' and want to be accurate to the second, you should use an FM or AM broadcast.

Most DAB radios have a clock on them which is set accurately, so there's no need to wait for the pips with your trigger finger at the ready.
