Quote:
Train passengers could see a big rise in ticket costs in the new year if investment in the railways is to be protected, Philip Hammond has warned.

The transport secretary said the current formula used to set fares at 1% above the Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation rate was not "set in stone".

He said it would be "irresponsible" to not consider charging passengers more.

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association union warned people may no longer be able to afford train travel.

Speaking to the National Rail Conference in Liverpool Mr Hammond said the government faced "stark choices".

I think it's "irresponsible" to encourage people back onto the road.

Oh wait; they'll probably address that dilemma by taxing cars even more.

How long does it take to cycle from Birmingham Newstreet to London Euston?

It will give the government more leeway to increase road taxes, at some point.

In 2002 my train fare was £ 771.75 per month I'm now paying £ 1454.30 how ridiculous is that.

It cost me almost £15 yesterday for a travelcard in to London (zones 1-5) before 9:30am. It's less than 10 miles to the centre of London from my house.
Less than 5 years ago it was about £7

Travel Card from where I live costs £17.50 last time I looked. Add the bus fair to the station (£3.80 return). A day to London costs each person £21.30

Drive to Epping, part for a quid (Weekends) or £3 (weekdays), and the same class of ticket costs £7.50. Assume a couple of quid for the car’s running, and we”re saving a lot per person. That’s lunch paid for.

Rail travel time around the same, I arrive at the same London terminus as I would if I took the train.

Yes rail fares are getting far too high. I can get a bus ticket to London for £12.50 return including the train fare. Add £4.50 for a london all day bus ticket and it is not too bad, but rail fares even online are excessive.

This will mean that fewer people will travel. Those who can’t afford a daily commute to LOndon will be priced out of jobs there, those who go in for leisure activities will just find things to do in other places.

It's still cheaper to fly to Malaga than it is to get a train to London. Mind you, my train season ticket is only £41 per month...but I am only going three stops down the line...

That is partly down to the fact that airlines do get a huge subsidy in the form of tax free fuel.

Great way to encourage people to use rail instead of their car. :?

I wonder if it is down to the subsidies being cut?
