This is clearly wrong. The government should stop companies discriminating against certain types of payment. |

How is it wrong? Certain types of payment cost more to process. Why should I subsidise people who choose to be awkward? |

This has been looked into before, and they get away with it because energy companies argue that it's not a penalty for paying by cash/cheque, but rather a discount for paying by Direct Debit. |

Yes but a £100 per year more? What if you had no bank account? If you pay by cash you could pay it directly into a bank using a payment slip, this would cost no more than a direct debit. |

A payment slip requires handling on a monthly/quaterly basis. Direct debit is a one-off setup and then automatic. |

The bank will chage (the business) a low rate for a DD (say 0.5p / transaction) while a much higher fee (say 15p) per credit slip. On top of this DD's will feed into automatic account systems ( customer account numbers etc) while paper vouchers will often require manual reconcilliation |

Yes but you are still sent a bill, whether it is paid or not. The handling can be done by the banks and the payment codes do show who the payment is from. It is cheaper than cheques but banks prefer automated payments because they can get rid of staff. hence they can price such payments cheaper. |

I don't get a bill for some services, I choose paperless billing where possible. But you're right, because they don't have to employ so many staff is the primary reason it's cheaper for them. |

I can't remember the last time I received a paper bill for anything TBH. |

Though I still cannot see that the extra cost for a business is £100 per year for what is effectively four bills. If so many already pay by standing order or direct debit then there should few extra costs for dealing with so few. I pay by direct debit as well so am not affected but I am aware that older customers prefer paper bills, then paying by cheque. |

Also, people who pay by cash/cheque often pay late. Why should the power companies be out of pocket? I suppose there's an arguement for a lower cost, but with heavy fines for paying late..... |

Yes but you could have a penalty if mot paid by a certain date. That would encourage quick payment. |

It would never wash, the OFT would strike the "heavy fine" down for being unfair. Any penalties must represent the actual costs the company incurs for late payment, no more. |

We choose to pay some of our bills online with a debit card. We never pay late, but we don't get the discount. How is that fair? |
