Anyone here seen any films that have been remastered for BR? Obviously I'm interested in this ![]() Also, TDK in HD just made everyone look slightly waxy, even on my mate's LED-lit 1080p beast ![]() |

If it qualifies as an old film then Blade Runner looks really good on Blu-Ray. In fact most films released (for the cinema) in the last 40 years are higher resolution than Full HD and should look good in HD (assuming a good quality transfer). Sky have an HD channel called MGM HD which shows mainly older films and those that I've watched have been good quality wise, though they don't match the best of the newer releases. HD Aliens are a must buy imo. |

I have to say, I hate watching DVDs these days because the quality is so poor even on a tiny little 8" screen. How quickly we become spoiled. It's not so long ago I threw out my VHS collection which was barely 240i ![]() |

Looks like Aliens has been given a working over for the BluRay set. Some screen caps at the end of this article show the improvements http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/18187/ ... u-ray-caps I am so looking forward to this set. My other half not so much. She finds the tension at the start of Alien too great to bear (and nothing happens for quite some time). |

I've seen several older films that look good in 1080p but I got the recent 30th anniversary edition of Flash Gordon and that was utterly shocking, looked like it has been badly upsampled from SD. So I don't think you can put any value on 'remastered' as a descriptive because it can just as easily be done badly as well. Jon |

Obviously, it depends on what you use as your source. The original negatives is a good start, failing those a good master print. After that, any form of computer tinkering can make or break it. I’d advise looking at the BluRay discs of the original Star Trek to show just how much information that was lost when it was moved from film to video (Star Trek:TOS was filmed on proper 35mm film, and the original negatives were scanned). The BluRay image should never be any worse than what’s on the source. At times, it seems that this can be the case. |

The BR-rip I saw of Predator was certainly a lot brighter/sharper than my some-sort-of-special-edition DVD ![]() Doubt I'll be re-buying too much of my own collection though, if at all. |

My policy is not to re-buy on BluRay but if it's a new film, I'll buy BR in preference to DVD. Jon |

Yes, I'll have to make a decision should a new film I'd actually like to own appear - the last one was TDK and only cos it was £6 (my sis already had the DVD and that had been my third time watching, so...) Got Bad Boys, Ghostbusters and the original Karate Kid free there, so I'll see what (if much) was done with those. Time hasn't been kind to Ghostbusters as I recall ![]() |

I bought a BR capable drive, after my DVD writer died last month. I had no plans to buy any BR movies, but the Band of Brothers box set was going for £20. I love the series, and already had it on DVD but a borrower returned it with two discs missing! I don't lend out my films anymore. Anyway, getting back to my point. BR is nice for super detailed films and such but, in places, the extra clarity made some scenes in BoB look almost unfinished. With that in mind I do wonder about these remastered films, and the Alien screenies don't look all that special - almost looks like the DVD stills have been degraded to show a greater contrast between the two formats. |

I never had a big DVD collection anyway and have certainly not replaced those I did own. I am buying anything new on BD though. I'm currently buying Disney ones on offer when I see them as I think they'll last a long time with starting a family (until they replace BD with something else tomorrow ![]() |
