Shigeru Miyamoto believes the next Nintendo console won't be 3D, arguing that not enough people have 3D televisions in their homes for it to be viable.

Nintendo revealed its impressive 3D handheld at E3 last month but it doesn't look as if the company will be utilising 3D technology for its next home console.

"I do not believe that [Wii 3D] will be our next step," Miyamoto told German website Spiegel. "One reason Wii is indeed so successful is because most people do not have any HDTV equipment and know how to appreciate what the Wii offers.

"The Nintendo 3DS is possible because it is a portable console and it works without 3D glasses. For the living room, consumers would need a 3D TV and it will take some time before enough households have 3D TVs."

Does anyone remember Miyamoto giving a similar reason as to why the Wii isn't an HD console?

Miyamoto also warned Wii owners not to expect the successor to the console to be here anytime soon. "Many people still have a lot of fun with the Wii, there are still many good games out for it. But we think about a successor once a console is launched. We monitor the market closely. When the time comes, we will announce a successor. But that will not be anytime soon."

He's right about 3d TVs currently (of course, and I suspect he'll continue to be right), but most people don't have any HD equipment?

Oh, and the Wii looks awful on an HD TV, seemingly no matter what you do with the game or TV resolution settings...

My mate started playing his Wii again - he's installed Homebrew and is playing old MD/SNES games on it which have much more playability than the current Wii ones

"Know how to appreciate what the Wii offers"? What, sweet [LIFTED] all?

There's only one Wii game that is actually fun and re-playable, and that's Super Mario. The rest is junk.

Other than my laptop, but I have no TV HD equipment at all, and I don't intend to get any in the near future.

I only even own an HD TV cos of my PS3 (though the space saving has made life a bit easier). I'd say you aren't missing much by not having an HD TV; it's been about almost nothing but hype IME, and in some cases makes images worse

Same here. Other than my iMacs I cannot watch HD content at all. I am considering getting a 32" HD TV with 1080p and a Xbox 360 to play games on but still not looking at BD.

I wouldn't spend any extra for 1080p on a set that size unless you can really see the difference, remembering how far back you'll be sitting etc...

It will be for the bedroom so only ten feet away. Less if I am playing a game.

My camera records 720 something, and maybe the laptop could be classed as HD something, but the fact that I don't know any specifics pretty much sums up my interest in the whole thing.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I don't even think my laptop can quite fit 1080i/p when I'm away from my big screen. I can manage 720p on the laptop, and that's about it. My parents are the same.

My netbook does 720p, but then I got it as what I suspect was a price cock-up at Play.com - I wouldn't have paid any extra for it

I've embraced HD!

I've got a 1080p TV in the lounge with Freesat HD, Blu-Ray and Xbox connected.
My camera records 720p video.
My PC monitor supports at least 1280x720.
The bedroom TV is 720p.

Also wherever possible I'll use the best connection I can for SD stuff in the (failed?) hope that it will make a difference. e.g. when I had the Wii I had the EDTV cable.

My iMacs can do 1080p without any trouble, but with no BD player thankfully there is bit torrent. :D

How much did that cost, and was there much of a difference if you don't mind me asking? I knew of it and mentioned it to my mate, but didn't have any details to hand...

I think it was about £12. I would say on the 42" TV it made a bit of difference. The image seemed to be a little sharper maybe. I was using the single video cable beforehand though so even proper scart would have been an improvement. I wouldnt put my hand on a bible and say it was significantly better though without doing a side-by-side comparison.
