Sony's 3.41 firmware is reportedly causing some issues with PlayStation 3 hard drives - but the hardware company insists that its update is not to blame.

CVG has been told that PS3 users are encountering issues when attempting to upgrade their hard drive or update to firmware 3.41. They are also experiencing console crashes.

However, Sony's response places the blame on the hard drives themselves. The platform holder suggests users try the update on the original PS3 hard drive.

"We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with upgrading Internal Hard Disc Drive (for PlayStation3) on your PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system," said Sony in a statement.

"The information available to our Consumer Services Department does not suggest that this is a problem PlayStation(R) owners are likely to experience when upgrading the HDD with 3.41update. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence.

We ask that you update the previous HDD first to see if the update will go through. Then update from the thumb drive that is formatted in FAT 32 and has the 3.41 update downloaded."

This isn't the first time that the PlayStation 3 has run into problems as a result of firmware updates.

Mine's works fine, but then it has the original HDD in it :|

Would anyone be surprised if this is an attempt to get people to upgrade to a 'bigger' PS3?

It's cobblers. Or more accurately it's a coincidence. I upgraded my HDD some time ago and I've never had any issue with firmware updates. If Sony didn't want people to upgrade their HDDs, they could have just made the storage a proprietary part like some other console makers I could mention. Instead they made it a standard part and even put instructions on how to upgrade it in the manual.

Nor do they actually stand to make any money off it either way, as they don't sell 'official' hard disk upgrades or anything.

As I said in another thread, when you have a huge population of devices that are being upgraded - and there are, what, 30 million PS3's out there now or something? - some of those upgrades are going to fail. And some of them are going to fail in similar ways. When you have a sufficiently large population, even that tiny group is going to look like something statistically significant when in fact it completely isn't.

I suppose I should know better than to expect the internet to treat anything rationally, rather than running round waving their arms in the air like a group of startled children.
