Quote:
ITV is to launch a new pay-TV strategy, MediaGuardian can reveal.

Elements of the strategy are understood to include the launch of a new channel and a deal relating to high-definition versions of its channels.

ITV's chairman, Archie Norman, and chief executive, Adam Crozier, are expected to talk about pay-TV as part of a wider plan when the broadcaster reports its half-yearly results next Tuesday.

In March Norman ruled out taking ITV2, 3 or 4 onto a pay-TV footing, saying it was "unrealistic" because pay-TV revenues would not outstrip income from advertising. But he added that there was a case for looking at looking at an altogether new channel.

According to industry sources, ITV intends to launch a new standalone channel brand that would be bundled as part of a package through pay-TV operators' subscription deals. It is believed that the channel would target men.

"It sounds like it may target a Dave [UKTV's pay TV channel] type audience," said a source.

Sat.1, RTL and Kabel 1 have started HD channels for their content and they charge for them as well... I don't get why I should pay extra for content I can already get for free, if it was new content or new series appearing months before they came to the free channels, I might consider it, but HD versions of the existing content isn't worth paying extra for.

Quite why you'd want either the bundle offer or HD TV from ITV is beyond me, never mind paying extra for it

So what extra will it add that Dave does not have. It is quite a watchable channel particularly Mock the week repeats. ;) Other than that I would not miss it. Also isn't there Men and Motors as well?

Same here, I tolerate the ads on the terrestrials because they have been there since for ever. Though it does give nice regular breaks for tea coffee toilet etc. It is not perfect but I can cope with it. Pay TV simply does not appeal to me. If channels like Discovery, History or National Geographic were free to watch then the audiences might shoot up, and the ad revenue accordingly.

Either I pay or I watch advert, not both. That's why I refuse to pay for Sky. I don't mind paying for the BBC as its advert free.

Yes paying for channels that carry ads seems like you are double paying.

I feel the same too. We have SKy 1 as part of the cable deal, but I don’t watch it much these days. A lot of the “padding” channels have little or no original EU produced output (Sky was exempted by Thatcher from having to meet the EU quota), so I can’t even say that paying for Sky encouraged production of anything of real value or worth.

At times, I feel the function of a lot of cable channels is just to expose the viewer to adverts, which of course it is.

I'm rather inclined to agree. The only thing I would generally watch on ITV is the champions league football and I'm not entirely sure I'd miss it all that much. After all, it's not as if my team would ever likely be playing or anything. I had a look at the stuff I have marked as series linked on my Sky box and not one of the programmes was being shown on ITV.

Same here. Of all of ITV1 output in the last two or three years, there has only been one program that I have actually watched and I can get that on DVD if necessary.

I would like to see Crozier on something like Hard talk, where he could be quizzed over his career. Is there any job he has made a success of? His Bank Manager would probably disagree with my sentiment, but success I'm not sure.
