It's cobblers. Or more accurately it's a coincidence. I upgraded my HDD some time ago and I've never had any issue with firmware updates. If Sony didn't want people to upgrade their HDDs, they could have just made the storage a proprietary part like some other console makers I could mention. Instead they made it a standard part and even put instructions on how to upgrade it in the manual. Nor do they actually stand to make any money off it either way, as they don't sell 'official' hard disk upgrades or anything. As I said in another thread, when you have a huge population of devices that are being upgraded - and there are, what, 30 million PS3's out there now or something? - some of those upgrades are going to fail. And some of them are going to fail in similar ways. When you have a sufficiently large population, even that tiny group is going to look like something statistically significant when in fact it completely isn't. I suppose I should know better than to expect the internet to treat anything rationally, rather than running round waving their arms in the air like a group of startled children. Jon |
