Why scared? More than what? Most recent vulnderabilities affect all versions of Windows - note XP SP2 and earlier usually aren't mentioned anymore, because they are out of support and won't be patched, whether they are affected or not...

I didn't know this, I thought that if you were using the latest and greatest (certainly Vista/7) you would be somewhat immune to a vulnerability hitting a product several generations old. I would have especially though that the kernel would have gone under some major revisions during the last few iterations of Windows...

Some older machines may not even be connected to the net so would not be at risk anyway.

Why should it be different to OS X or Linux? They have also suffered similar vulnerabilities that stretch over several versions...

Again, I didn't know this, but then again articles tend not to say "infects OS 10.1 - 10.6". I don't know much about the development of OS X or Linux, but I know Solaris has gone through some major kernel restructuring over the last three or four versions. What with Windows people calling every release of OS X a service pack, I got the impression that Windows radically changed under the hood with most releases.

Is I understand it (i.e. dimly), at the kernel level, it's mostly new additions, so old vulnerabilities are liable to hang around for many generations.
But on the bright side, they have doubtless added an incalculable number of new vulnerabilities that affect Win7/2008 R2 only.
