Quote:
Sex workers and their support groups have condemned a police operation to "out" prostitutes even when they have not been convicted of any crime.

Six street-based sex workers in Newham, east London, were named on the Metropolitan police website. Police posted their photos, full names and dates of birth.

In a second case, two Polish women who were selling sex from their home in Aldgate, east London, were raided by City of London police as part of Operation Monaco.

Operation Monaco was launched in May 2009 but police have admitted that just one charge of controlling a prostitute for gain has been made, as well as 52 charges for placing cards in phone boxes advertising sexual services.

Police took photographs of the Polish women, who were not charged. Last Sunday, photos appeared in News of the World. The women said they were distressed by the police raid and the lack of warning that their pictures would appear in a tabloid newspaper.

"Why have the police done this to me?" said Vicky, one of the two. "I work as a childminder and a cleaner and do some sex work to make ends meet. I pay tax and national insurance and am not doing anything illegal. A lot of people know me, and even though the News of the World blocked out my face I'm still identifiable by my hair, clothes and jewellery."

The police put out pictures of suspects all the time, so some sort of distinction might need to be made :|

Erm, I sure as hell wouldn't want a prostitute looking after kids, even if they were the best childminder in the world. And I know there will be legal definitions, but surely it is illegal? :?

Prostitution is not illegal, just soliciting. The problem is that they could be sued for defamation. All it will do is drive British women out of the sex trade and the east Europeans who are allowed to enter will replace them as they have less to lose here. That is if they are not found to be breaching the human rights act. It could be deemed to be a cruel and degrading form of punishment for which they have committed no offence. The courts will have to find against them and pay compensation to the women. Well I hope that they raid the police pension funds to pay for this.

Unless the Police intend to press charges I expect they'll have to withdraw the pictures, otherwise they're just inviting lawsuits for defamation/loss of earnings etc.

This is a bad move by Police IMO. By all means post pictures of suspects or convicted criminals, but if a person is either found not guilty or the CPS refuses to press charges, then the pictures should be removed post-haste.

Or indeed accusations of giving away free advertising.

Same here, I'm sure a few of her employers (parents ;) ) would be horrified to discover this. Also she may pay tax on a couple of jobs, but does she really declare income from prostitution.

Yes but most people do not know that so are quiet happy in their ignorance. Personally I would prefer a prostitute who was good rather than a paedophile as in cornwall last year taking photos of the kids.

Prostitution is MAN made, men want sex and are willing to pay for it

its the 'men' who commit the crimes not normally the women
as far as i am aware men kill prostitutes (who offer themselves as a service) or go out and harm children, not the women, prostitutes or otherwise

the women use prostitution to provide 'ends meet' MEN use this service to get their 'ends met'

its MEN who/whom has to answer, not the woman providing a service, that MEN want/need/require/use …

Ah, the 'all men are rapists' school of thought. Wonderful.

It takes two to tango. Isn't that argument suggesting that drug dealers are innocent?

Actually it's the "All Men are evil and All Women are utterly angelic" argument.

It's still complete crap.
