Quote:
Student debt levels are projected to rise to £25,000 for those starting university this year, research suggests.

The annual survey of 2,000 UK students for university guide Push also found average yearly debt had increased by 5.4% to £5,600 per year of study.

The figures come as Lord Browne prepares his review of student fees and finance for the government.

Ministers say any changes to the system will take account of debt levels.

Pressure on places is likely to be more intense than ever ahead of the new academic year.

Many university courses are already full and with record numbers of people applying, some students may have to settle for courses and universities they would not otherwise choose.

It doesn't surprise me, I've got ~£20,000 debt, accommodation has gotten more expensive (I think the cheapest at aber now is >£75/week as apposed to ~£60/week in my first year), food is more expensive, utilities are more expensive...Even if the uni's keep their current prices, students will have to borrow more for basic living.

Going by the debt me and my mates (Class of 2K :D ) got into, I'd say the numbers are waaaaaaay off. Way way off. That or the stats are massaged by those who acrue none.

I left uni with a debt of £20k or so after spending six years of study. Dread to think how much debt the new medical students will accrue.

And then there's retards like me who fail a year and now don't know if they can afford to complete their degree. I really don't want to get to the start of final year and realise I can't do it.

I left uni with £2500 debt. But then I did get in the last year before they brought in tuition fees. I even got a £400 grant the first year.
The first two years, I paid off my debt with summer work, but I spent a lot more in the third year, hence the debt.
I paid it off within a year as I got vast amounts of overtime in my first job.

I have done two years of my degree.

I have worked part-time (~30 hours a week) both years, and am now spending a year in industry. I have about £10k of debt with the SLC (student loans company, or stupid lazy c*nts) and a £1200 overdraft.

At the very least I will clear my overdraft this year. I hope to go into my third year with a couple of grand in the bank because I don't plan to work in my final year.

I don't think I would have managed working and doing a degree, especially not that amount of hours. The uni here advises no more that 18 hours/week IIRC...

I did more than that when I was doing my degree.. could be the reason I got a Desmond, or it could of been the fact i was running a pub with the obvious problem of free alcohol on tap when ever I felt like it

Yes but the supposed university premium that you get from having a degree is plummeting so the long term benefit of a degree is falling, especially with the debts climbing fast.

If they carry on with fees/loans rather than a graduate tax, I'd hate to think how much debt my son will get into when he goes to uni.

The real problem is that if it carries on that way all degrees will have to be much more focused on the usability of the degree in the jobs market after. No one will pay a fortune for a degree that will never benefit its owner with a higher income. So it will be an end of classics and far more biased to vocations. So geology classes will shrink and the only ones who get accepted will be those funding by oil and mining companies.
