IIRC it is more complicated than 'hold the button down until it beeps', which it probably shouldn't be. However, in this case, it's not like you have a choice...

I think the point is this issue is apparently only affecting people who have swapped the hard drive in their PS3s for bigger models. If you can swap out a hard drive, you should be up to patching something from a USB stick.

Yes. You download the firmware file onto a USB stick, then boot the PS3 into a 'safe mode menu' (involves holding down the power button at startup until you hear the right number of beeps). One of the options on that menu is 'install firmware from USB'.

Thanks for that. So at least there is a back up solution to fix things for customers. Though swapping drives is something I would never consider on a console, preferring to max the drive when I buy.
