My most memorable moment is one in the original F.E.A.R near the start (and in the demo) where you're climbing a ladder and as you hit the lip, you suddenly see the feet of Alma (the little girl) just waiting right at the very top.

You can then move back down or up and she'll disappear before you get to the top and "off" the ladder.

So you've just come down and gotten over that little jump, and take about 1-2 metres forward from the ladder and an image of Paxton Fettel jumps straight out at you.

Scared the life out of me.

I don't like F.E.A.R. any more.

Easy one this...

Descent - combine laser- & missile-spewing evil mutated robots, excellent graphics, pant-wetting level design and six degrees of freedom.

The worst bit was always trying to get the exit after destroying the reactor.

I had nightmares for months.

I didn't play the original, but i played a cut down version of Descent 2 that came with the Graphics Card.

They added a Guide bot which will guide you around the objectives, including how to get out of the complex after destroying the reactor.

Easy right?

But the panic you get when you're following the Guide bot around and then suddenly realise you've lost it in the maze of turns... do you carry on and he's just ahead? Do you wait for him to come back to you? Do you turn around and go back the way you came in the hopes of finding him?

Fun times :D.

D2 is still a favourite, especially multi-player. Used to play it over a serial cable before the days of networks

I must have clocked up months in that game. I used to dream about it a lot. However, D3 was very disappointing though... especially seeing as I actually had a paid-for retail pack :(

Aliens on the C64. I would have been about 11 or 12 playing it in the dark by myself in a strange house. I think it was the first person perspective that did it.

If I played it now I would probably laugh.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

F.E.A.R. scared me. Dead Space did to the point where I sold it. Doom 3 scared me too.

I'll always remember the dogs jumping through the window of Resident Evil - that's a standout memory for me.

I think there's probably loads more from older games but I forget them as time goes on.

Thief: Deadly Shadows. No contest.

One level based in the Shalebridge Cradle - an abandoned lunatic asylum - truly bloody scary. F.E.A.R and System Shock 2 don't even come close.
I never thought it was possible for a game to freak you out that much.

I do mean properly scary, not just a few 'jumpy' moments that seem to pass for scary these days.

Play it in a darkened room, with headphones on, and you'll feel the colour draining out of you (and quite possibly, running down your leg).

Beware, spoilers ahoy! Kieron Gillen wrote an epic account of the cradle.

Quote:
The Cradle is the penultimate level the 2004 “Thief: Deadly Shadows”. “Journey Into the Cradle”, originally printed in Issue 146 of PC GAMER, is a ten-page dissection of the level. It is, as far as I’m aware, the longest article any major magazine has printed on a single level in a videogame.

The asylum area in vampire the masquerade. I played it in the dark with headphones on and there were a few moments I jumped, which ratcheted the adrenaline levels higher. Including one moment when my GF at the time (now wife) tapped me on the shoulder and asked me if I wanted a cup of tea!! It probably wasn't helped as there was a storm outside blowing a hooley.

I think FEAR is the only one that has scared me - there have lots were I have had shocks but only FEAR was actually frightening
