Alexgadgetman, what OS are you using for GTA4? My friend has it running fine so can see if there's anything he's done.

Just updated to Windows 7 (I dont see much difference, so its updated not upgraded :) ).
I was hoping for greater compatibility before I clean reinstall in a few weeks hopefully. Anyway, I have tried running it in XP compatibility (steam that is), alas it produces no different results.

It is after I press play on the startup menu, it will pretend to do something for a split second then either hang or BSOD. I have no idea where to look really, I had heard GTAIV for PC was a bit buggy but it was one of those buy and hope it aint you things.

I have also checked there various hardware drivers and they are all up to date...

Any help would be appreciated :)
Alex.

Alex, try booting up with the -safemode tag on the end of the GTA4 .exe. You do this by creating a shortcut to the desktop of LaunchGTAIV.exe, then go to properties and add -safemode straight after the file name.

This will usually tell you if the game's going to run or not, because safe mode forces everything off and puts it at 640x480.

Failing that, I would say your system is not capable of playing it. What specs have you got? Even though I doubt you not being able to play it (it runs fine for me on a 3.4ghz Pentium D, 4gb RAM and a 9600GT), you never know. It doesn't like DX9 era cards for example.

What hardware are you running?

My friend's was running relatively fine with a Q6600, P5N-E SLI, 4GB RAM and an HD4850. It's now even better with an IP35-Pro and HD4890. Should be meeting up with him later today so i'll see if he did anything special.

It uses Physx, so make sure those drivers are up to date...

Done that,GPU,checked firewall,Anti-virus and defraged(twice)but keeps crashing at the same place so un-installed the game and am downloading again.Hope that sorts it out.

530.2 KB/s at the mo..... so it might take a while

No need to download again, just right click on it in your Steam Games window and "verify integrity of the game cache", it'll compare it with the files on the server and download anything that is missing.

It didn't work anyway. Steam came back saying it's OK....

Must be something else
