I think – even in this day of high-production titles – the soundtrack which accompanies a game is often sidelined and neglected by the developer, who instead pump ever-increasing amounts of money into graphical fidelity. This is a shame as while the visual aesthetic of a title obviously contributes a substantial percentage of its identity and character, a vital percentage – indeed often that which only the truly great titles posses – is levied on it soundtrack. All my favourite games have memorable musical scores, adding weight, gravitas, authenticity, atmosphere, tension and a sense of wholeness and integration.
Sorry to plug a title again which I am sure few will have played, but Outcast truly was a title that was made by it musical score. Without it, its beautifully rendered (in voxels!) visuals of alien worlds would have impressed for sure, its solid gameplay, design and plot provided entertainment, but you wouldn't have been transported so completely without the sweeping and majestic score of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra which offered astute and beautiful tracks with a variety to match the varied and delightful world created by Infogrames.
Of course, it is not just Outcast that excels in providing this crucial element to the gaming experience, with many other titles providing memorable and fantastic scores and soundtracks. Vice City stands as modern example of this.
