Gameplay details - potential spoilers

Quote:
As reported, Black Ops is a Cold War-era deniable-ops shooter that tackles Vietnam, the frosty Russian Mountains, the Loation undergrounds and everything in between. Developer Treyarch hopes the locations will inject some much needed variety into the CoD series.

OXM describes Black Ops as "unbelievably gorgeous", with snazzier smoke and fire effects, better draw distance, more convincing character animation and "incredible" lighting in some scenes.

You play as a member of the Studies and Operations Group (SOG), a pocket of CIA-sanctioned forces whose methods are unconventional and actions deniable.

SOG missions the mags saw include rappelling out of a helicopter into Hue City to verify that the Russians are setting up shady backroom deals, and a stealthy operation in the Ural Mountains called 'WMD' which has you repelling down the side of a ridge, Modern Warfare style.

Another level, which kicks off with a helicopter crash into the Huong River, has you swimming and diving through the murky waters - with only your knife for company.

New weapons include the Crossbow, which can be used for both stealthy kills and an explosive tip secondary fire shot, the M202 rocket launcher and an incendiary shotgun.

Of course as you'd have seen in the debut trailer Black Ops also features pilotable vehicles, including the SR-71 Blackbird (which has you guiding troops on the ground past guard patrols - a bit like Modern Warfare's own air missions) and the helicopter, which OXM stresses is fully controllable - you even have helicopter-on-helicopter gun fights.

As far as multiplayer goes Treyarch is staying quiet, though vehicles will return (but "not the way you remember them"), some kind of co-op mode will feature and increased character customisation is promised.

If those titles are correct, they're going down the Tomb Raider route of 'We're completely out of ideas, but there's idiots out there!' :oops:

CoD: Black Ops Killstreak rewards revealed

Last night, Treyarch allowed media to get some hands-on time with the multiplayer component of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The demo showed of a number of Killstreak rewards for those skilful enough to actually kill more than one person before being riddled with bullets.

Though rewards such as Spy Plane, Care Package and Attack Helicopter will be familiar to Modern Warfare players, there are a few new ones thrown in to look forward to.

Here's the full list, thanks to XG247:

* 3 Kills - Spy Plane
* 3 Kills - RC-XD (RC bomb)
* 4 Kills - Counter Spy Plane
* 4 Kills - SAM Turret
* 5 Kills - Care Package
* 5 Kills - Napalm Strike
* 6 Kills - Sentry Gun
* 6 Kills - Mortar Team
* 7 Kills - Attack Helicopter
* 7 Kills - Valkyrie Rockets
* 8 Kills - Blackbird
* 8 Kills - 'Rolling Thunder'
* 9 Kills - Chopper Gunner
* 11 Kills - Attack Dogs
* 11 Kills - Gunship

CoD: Black Ops signs Hollywood Talent

Activision's announced the Hollywood talent it's signed up for sure-fire hit, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Award-winning actors Gary Oldman and Ed Harris have joined the cast of Treyarch's shooter, with David S. Goyer also coming on board to provide script consultation and story development support.

Oldman, known for his work in The Professional, Dracula and Batman: The Dark Knight, will reprise his role as Viktor Reznov from Call of Duty: World at War. Meanwhile Harris, best known for his roles in films like The Abyss, A History of Violence and Apollo 13, will play one of the game's main characters, CIA operative Jason Hudson.

Filmmaker David S. Goyer's writing credits include Batman: Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Blade and the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel.

"Oldman, Harris and Goyer are considered some of Hollywood's finest talents and they perfectly complement Call of Duty: Black Ops' ambitious and immersive single player experience," said Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch, of the signings.

"Their contributions have helped us to push the boundaries of our story telling and character development far beyond anything we have ever attempted before in the franchise."

Black Ops' multiplayer mode was revealed at a Los Angeles event last week. Read our hands-on Call of Duty: Black Ops preview for the lowdown.

So does anyone think they will be willing to pay £55 for this game? Assuming the big retailers even sell it for that much, of course.

Some games maybe, a Call of Duty title, certainly not.

Maybe for a few games, but as you say many games are not worth it. If the game was cheaper and more content was online it might be better value for some users.

Call of Duty: Black Ops gets 3D compatibility

The latest game in the Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops, will be 3D compatible.

The announcement by Treyarch, makers of the game, is a significant one for the 3D format, as not only is it one of the biggest games franchises of all time using 3D, it is not tied down to any one console.

The 3D version of Call of Duty: Black Ops will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the PC.

All you need for the console versions is a 3D ready TV/monitor for the game to work (and stereoscopic glasses).

For the PC version you need a PC with Nvidia 3D Vision technology inside.

Mark Lamia from Treyarch said about the news: "Development of stereoscopic 3D began as an R&D project, but once we saw what the technology brought to the Call of Duty experience, what a great fit and how immersive it was, we knew that we had to develop it for Black Ops.

Seamless play

Lamia continued: "We made sure the experience is seamless for gamers to use with a simple menu option to enable stereoscopic 3D or disable it at any time whether playing in the single player campaign, multiplayer or Zombies."

Gaming has always been flagged as one of the driving forces behind 3D in the home and there will be no bigger release that Call of Duty: Black Ops this year.

So it will be interesting if the game has a significant impact in the sales of 3D TVs, when it is released in the UK 9 November.

...

That's one of the best shots at getting 3D some good press if they can pull it off...

CoD: Black Ops campaign trailer OUT

As promised Activision's put out a brand new Call of Duty: Black Ops trailer - on the eve of Medal of Honor's US launch. Coincidence?

The movie gives us a decent idea of what to expect in the single player game, including motorbikes, Russian roulette and underwater stations.

"You'll move without boundaries, you'll act above the law, you'll use every means necessary, to stop the wars that are hidden from the world."

As game trailers go, that's one of the better ones :)
