PS4 update triggers 'stability issues', claims EA [Update]

PS4 firmware update 1.50 is required for several important system features including online multiplayer, Remote Play, gameplay sharing, 'play as you download', party chat, Blu-ray and DVD playback, second screen capabilities and more.

It makes me wonder why they had to leave it till launch day? They could have simply locked any feature behind a clock and call back system. Though I guess with the lead times for production they had no option.

EA have since retracted their statement. There were allegedly 1 million PS4s sold (that`s sold, not shipped) in the first 24 hours. if there are any major defects, we`ll know by Wednesday at the latest I assume.

The firmware has actually been available for a week or so to download from Sony`s website, so you can install it via a USB stick to avoid the early network congestion that all these kind of launches seem to have. However there`s a very reasonable case that both MS and Sony are rather rushing their product to market to get in for the Christmas buying season, including Black Friday in the US. As a result, things are happening at the last minute that in an ideal world would have been locked down weeks ago. And that is a recipe for problems.

If these are both two rushed to market products then the prospects for disaster do seem to be increasing. Though I thought that Microsoft had monopolised the fail boat launch schedule recently. It might have been better to leave the launch until Black Friday and really have very high sales on that day. It would have given then both an extra couple of weeks to resolve these issues. Though it would also have compressed all the problems of the day up update into a smaller period before Christmas.

You have to hope they learned from the 360 launch. They rushed the design, got something that had next to no reliability and it ended up costing them a couple of billion. That is IMO why the One is larger than the PS4, I reckon they've massively over-engineered the cooling.

IMO it would be a bad idea to launch on Black Friday. there is a lot of buying that day but a lot of it is one-day discounts and specials, which are all competing with you for consumer's money and you can't discount a console on launch day, or at least no-one ever has - although it's not necessarily a bad idea, now I come to think about it. MS have got in just in time IMO, a week before Black friday is probably as late as you can go.

The reality is not that they should be launching a week earlier or later, but that they should have been launched (IMO) much earlier. These two should have been launched the end of September, not the end of November.

My comment about launching on Black Friday did not necessarily mean a big discount. It could be as little as $5 off or a free accessory. The point being that there would be millions out there with cash in their pocket, and if I were in the position of a slightly cheaper launch day new console or an end of line TV I might opt for the console. So would many others. It would also boost launch day sales, as it would get the non gamers involved.

I agree about launching earlier but it seems like they were rushed into launching with the changes in announcements at the exhibition.

There are a few reports of people being able to get their PS4 working by following it. Equally, there are reports of people for whom it did no good at all. It's fairly reasonable troubleshooting advice for a non-technical person.

Be better if they all just worked of course.

It has also advised users to make sure that the hard drive "is properly seated" in its bay, saying a loose connection can prevent the console from powering on completely.

If this is the internal hard drive then wouldn't opening it to check this invalidate the warranty? :? :?

No, the PS3 and PS4 both have hard drives that are user upgradeable. There's even instructions on how to do it in the user manual.

Thanks I skipped the PS3 so did not realise that there was a user upgradable drive. That makes sense now.

Of itself that's not dumb. Doing so without emailing the people involved? Very dumb.

It does depend on whether they know what email address their account is registered with.

Sony reportedly preparing PS4 and Vita bundle for Xmas

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/43 ... -for-xmas/

There aren't enough Vita games for me to give a crap about it, personally. And the streaming thing would be pointless as I can play my home console when I want anyway.

PS4 UK launch apps include BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/43 ... bbc-sport/

Never tried Demand 5, think the only thing I watch there is TGS and it's not even worth downloading the app for

Netflix and Lovefilm are good, 4OD just isn't worth using it's that buggy, iPlayer I blitz... though it must be due a crap update soon
