Plus most of the cars are horrendous to look at. Even the GTR was made nasty by the jagged edges everywhere.

Those are rendered “photos” take in the game. Their quality is far better than the in game graphics.
The photo mode does allow some trickery, such as using a wide aperture, but the models are the same. To say the cars look horrendous is a little OTT. It copes better with static lighting, but I've added more shots from in-game. There is some shadow aliasing too, but I wouldn't say it ruins the experience.
