Personally I find them annoying, taking me 'out of the game' for no real benefit that I can see. If I've did something that unlocks something else, just tell me the next time I'm at the options screen. I don't want it coming up in the middle of a firefight or during a plot-tastic cut-scene

You can turn off the popup on the 360

I dont mind acheivements that track my progress through a game. I absolutely will not go all out to get every one though as I think this takes away from the game. Someone I knew seemed to believe that their higher acheivement score meant they were a better player. They werent. They just played a single game obsessively until every point was squeezed out of it and moved on.

I don't actively seek to achieve them, but I do like to hear the little jingle when I've done something by accident.

On playing COD:MW2, the music and display when you unlock something or reach a new level really pees me off. Especially when I've got an awesome kill streak going.
In Batman, I hate the "ring" and symbol when I'd achieved something - I'm not someone who goes after achievements for the sake of it.

i find it fun to go acheivement hunting in games ive already completed, theres no real point to it, but its something to do when im bored but as far as the whole "getting a game just for the easy achievements/trophies" fad? no point imo, i play games to enjoy them, achievement hunting is just a time-killer.

I like them in Gran Turismo.
But not elsewhere.
