Kinect has finally been released and reviewers are voicing their opinions on Microsoft's latest peripheral. In CVG's review of Kinect racing game 'Joy Ride' our man Tim highlighted an aspect that could potentially eliminate an entire genre from Kinect's future library. The review points out a disconnect between the player and the on-screen driver, and posits that the 'full-body' nature of Kinect detaches Joy Ride from the real experience it is trying to replicate. "In Joy Ride, you'll very quickly begin to begrudge your on-screen persona," Tim writes. "They demonstrate a very different experience to the person in control: Not only do they get to sit down whilst you have to pointlessly support your weight throughout - but they're constantly smiling, too. "After an hour in Joy Ride's company, it's highly unlikely you'll be doing the same." It's a sentiment that was echoed by Ubisoft earlier this year. Narrative director for Ubisoft's H.A.W.X 2, Edward Douglas, told CVG that losing button control in the genre risked its 'authenticity'. According to Douglas "buttons are needed" for the control of vehicles. Joy Ride is currently the Kinect game with the lowest review scores. How in the name of hell have they designed a racing game that you have to stand up to play? I read the hardware behind Kinect though is interesting (think CVG gave it 8.something) but the games so far are a bit pants. The sports one and the adventure one look a hit for the kids at xmas though. |

I saw something about Kinect on The Gadget Show not so long ago. They showed off a racing game. My first though was how do you accelerate and brake the car. |

Simple answer is you don't. It does it for you. Mind you, given the almost legendary input lag, steering may be an issue too. |
