Direct2Drive, one of the more prominent players in the PC digital distribution market, has quietly launched a new rentals feature.

The new service, which kicked off over the weekend when everyone had their backs turned, lets punters nab select titles for $5 for five hours of play. If they then decide to purchase the game, that $5 is deducted from the total price.

Among the first titles up for rent are Silent Hill: Homecoming, Grid, Divinity 2 and F.E.A.R.

Rental in digital distribution are uncommon. Onlive's rentals appear considerable cheaper, with 3-day and 5-day rentals setting you back $5.99 and $8.99 respectively, as Shack News notes.

Steam, the dominant digital distribution service, doesn't offer rentals, but occasionally makes games free for all to play during a certain time - usually weekends.

But Direct2Drive's rentals may serve as an attractive proposition to those frustrated with the distinct lack of demos for PC.

Seems a tad expensive to me!

Very expensive actually - compared to blockbusters for example.
