I'm trying to think of the word that names a genre of games.

A bit like "casual" games.

It's a specific word and describes the games a bit like Child of Eden or bubble tanks where it's almost an organic game. They normally have atmospheric music and trippy but very organic graphics.

There is another flash game in this genre but I can't think of the name (something like ether or something) and you start as just a circle and gradually grow as you "consume" the "enemy" beings on your level and the bigger you get you drop down through levels with bigger and bigger "enemies".

I keep thinking of "ambient" games but that's not quite right. Nor is "passive" games.

Can anyone think what it is?

It sounds like you mean games that have a very 'chill out' vibe to them, rather than the 'blow sh!t up' style of games. 'Abstract' maybe?

I had seen Osmos but it wasn't the one I was thinking of although that is another example of the same genre.

I found the game I was thinking of though...

Just bought Osmos for my iPhone and it's really good.

That might apply to angry birds.

I looked up Rez/Child Of Eden on Wiki and the genre is listed as "Rail shooter / Music game" whereas Flower is listed as a "Poetic adventure"

Flower can't be classified as a shooter, since there is no shooting. Nor in fact is it on rails, although some parts of it are quite constrained. If anything, it bears resemblance to Q-bert or De Blob. If it's anything, it's a colour-em-up.
