A Sony Computer Entertainment patent application has been discovered for interrupting PlayStation gameplay to display an ad.

The patent, filed in July last year, explains that a warning message would be displayed to the player before suspending gameplay, displaying an advertisement, and then "rewinding" a portion of the game before resuming.

So you're playing Killzone Multiplayer and just make a nigh on impossible head shot when "BOOM, drink Coca Cola!" and then you're put back 3 seconds before you took the shot and the guy decides to head in a different direction...

OK...

I wouldn't mind if the adverts were, say, on billboards. Those games are generally set in depict urban landscapes where such things would be expected. So an advert for fizzy sugared on a poster would not seem out of place.

To interrupt a game in the way you describe seems idiotic. Would everyone in the multiplayer game see ads at the same time? I guess they would have to or the game would somehow become unbalanced and fragmented.

I would expect this would kill the free/freemium game market pretty quickly if they implemented it.

I'd also go out of my way to avoid whatever product they were advertising.

Wow. That's what I've wanted for years - especially for that authentic tropical island feel in FarCry.

No, seriously - I've been talking about this since the early nineties. It's a superb idea. :)

I am of course being sarcastic. Tossers

I do that with many products that annoy me.
