Back in 1996, I played a game called Z. It was a strategy based game in the ilk of Command & Conquer but with robots. It was fun since I hated C&C but loved playing this. It has been released on iOS (PITA to play on iPhone but probably playable on iPad) and there's an open-source version: http://zod.sourceforge.net/Have just had some fun playing it.

I loved their games (CE, Magic Pockets, wasn't Gods one of theirs?), but anything after the first level was often too much for my younger self

I remember Gods. I think I had it for the Amiga. That reminds me, I have a PC version of the original Speedball2 somewhere.
