Jesus wept. FPSs aren't killing the industry! Not unless you're dumb enough to try and flog something like Bodycount in the first place. You'd seriously struggle to name 40 FPSs from the last few years, especially ones that were ever expected to sell by anyone with a brain.

And who's fault is it when a disgrace like Aliens: CM gets released, eh?

We've never had it so good*, but that's also why dross or bad business model efforts sit on the shelf. At least have the wit to have a digital fire sale after your first month or whatever, maybe look at your sales figures then and consider DLC... but then I'm a customer, I should be charging you for this enlightenment

* The classics of every genre are back and better than ever with newer efforts like Dishonored and Batman to name two, backed by some stellar indie efforts that are propping up online services that actually deserve to die off otherwise.

As someone who is crap at FPS I struggle to name any apart from the Halo series and the really big budget offerings like call of Duty etc. The problem is that most are highly derivative and bring nothing new. The fact that the games have a short shelf life is because they are all so similar. Relying on DRM to stop second hand users will just accelerate the decline of the industry. It will deter new buyers because many pay full price knowing that they can get much of their money back through selling. Also they are all fighting for the same consumers spend, which may be limited.

There aren't that many FPS. I certainly couldn't name 40. The problem isn't gonna be down to FPS. The problem will be down to lack of new imaginative titles and if you're gonna block secondhand games, you're gonna kill off customers who "buy, try, and sell". They're the ones who are willing to pay RRP because they'll get some money back when they sell on. You also lose out on customers who've bought secondhand games and liked them enough to shell out money for brand new sequels. And if you're not generating much money from new, innovative games, you're gonna stick to flogging bog standard games.

The only solution may be decent playable demos. Without demos why would people risk throwing money down the drain on a DRM loaded game? There may be a series of complaints regarding refunds at retailers, which will have to go back to developers as rubbish, because the disks cannot be sold as seconds.

I've bought any amount of games because of demos, the problem is they take far too long to download and take up a lot of space where the actual game might run off the disc! Also, whether Live or PSN, the experience is terrible compared to what it could be.

I have a 3.5-meg connection. Downloading anything takes ages. Demos are a no-no for me. I would take a punt on a secondhand game for £5.

I'm not even sure it matters with PSN, though I average a meg d/l it seems.

Yes but with the push towards downloads it and blocking second hand games you might be locked out either way.
