Surely modifying the game to work with just one Linux distro would give the community enough of a headstart to get it working with others? That might violate the licensing of some games, since it would require the source code to be made open source, but even only supporting one OS like Valve did would have been something. My dreams of a Linux powered games machine will have the wait a few more years :(
