OK, you've probably already seen this video from Jan 6th (or something).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uep1H_NvZS0&noredirect=1

The whole video is actually really interesting as they're doing TAS (tool assisted speed runs) on several games. The first few runs actually fail though.

However, at about 31 minutes they start playing a Super Mario World TAS and it is completely mind blowing.

I had a Super Nintendo when I was 10 and I played it to death. Having said that, I've learned more about this game in the past 48 hours than I ever knew before.

I knew one glitch on SMW that I think I watched on Bad Influence or Games Master (I can't remember which). Anyway, my glitch was in Forest of Illusion where you could get a cape and use a particular platform that has three Wigglers on it. If you jump on them repeatedly then after 5 you get a 1UP, then 2UP, 5UP, and so on. Also the score you get from each one increases exponentially too. Eventually it glitches out with Japanese characters replacing the score and stuff.

Anyway, that video is ridiculous. They use frame perfect scripting to "play" the game and they also have 8 "controllers" connected. They use a 7-wire connection cable to simulate a 4 way adapter with 4 controllers in it... twice.

By playing the game and exploiting certain features (like the way it queues up sprites etc...) and by pushing extra info in the way of using the 8 controller ports they are able to reprogram the game while actually playing it. They write playable versions of pong and snake into it?!?!?!?

Anyway, I'm now addicted to learning more about SMW. I've been watching these videos with this guy doing the glitches (admittedly he isn't the best) but he's doing them in real time with a controller. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqOahFz8xlo

I now need to learn more. I'd love to get my hands on the source code.

A lot of the gaming magazines of the period also highlight the common cheats. Very handy to level up in some games.

I'm more impressed by the 8 second Mario Kart 64 laps tbh, the intentional glitching is pretty cool, makes you wonder if they sometimes used things like that to glitch to certain levels intentionally as part of software testing

I am sure that they did.

AGDQ was amazing this year, I watched almost the whole thing and was blown away by the whole thing. The F-Zero GX runs by CGN0 were insane :D
