The recently revealed God of War Collection sounds pretty freakin’ sweet, but unfortunately for European gamers, it won’t be coming out across the pond until at least January 2010. This according to a post on VG247 where SCEE claimed that, “We are currently looking into options to bring God of War I and II to SCEE consumers on PS3; however it will not be possible to release the games this calendar year. We will provide further information in due course.” Why? Shipping issues? Magical Gnomes? A ban on AWESOME? The collection will be coming out in the US before Christmas and while we wish we had more solid deets for you Euro gamers, we offer up the title’s official box art (seen above) as compensation instead…

*nodnodnod*

Being a fan of hacknslash/action/adventure games like the Devil May Cry series, the God of War series was one which i wanted to play on the PS3 but couldn't due to lack of backwards compatibility... now i'm really looking forward to it :D

+ Further confirmation here - clicky

People are suggesting that this is how Sony might cater to the demand for PS2 BC and make some money out of it - I hope they're wrong cos if that's the case, I'll personally be saying a big 'f*ck you' to Sony...

Don't get me wrong though, I can understand why people would want, say, an HD special edition of a favourite older game :D

I mean i do agree with what some people would say IF they just ported the original game straight to the PS3 and slapped a price tag on it.

However if this really is "remastered" in HD (i.e. it looks much sharper) then i don't really mind paying for it.

I mean in general on a gaming forum you'll inevitably find one thread which is like "If you could have one classic game remastered in HD, what would it be?" and there'll be lots of replies forwarding suggestions and the odd couple who are just like "I'd rather them spend their time on making new/better games".

Anyhow, the point of the post is that IF it is does get a nice visual (and maybe gameplay? *crosses fingers*) bump then i don't see why Sony shouldn't charge for it... as long as it's not extortionate that is (maybe £20 a la GT5 Prologue?).

At least it's better than Valve's atttempt with "Half Life: Source"... i mean whoop-de-doo, we get swinging boxes now due to the port to the source engine, the problem is it still looks shocking by today's standards (although iirc, kudos to Valve to just charge the same as the original Half Life on Steam and for bundling it into the "Collector's Edition or w.e." of Half Life 2).

+1, but did I read somewhere that the older PS3's that do have BC upscale PS2 games to an extent? If so, I'd like to see that in motion...

I think it's just that the PS3 can generally upscale any SD source regardless of whether or not it's a game, video, DVD etc.

However as usual there should be a difference between "true HD" and "upscaled SD" depending on how good the HD renders are and how good the SD upscaler is.

The backwards compatibility isn't happening - it wasn't up to much on the 360 and it apparently was pretty lousy on the 60gb PS3 - I have one of those but I sold all of my PS2 games so never tried it. I'd rather Sony & devs concentrated on current titles, not worry over getting the older ones to work. This remastering idea works for me though. I've just played through a remastered Riddick and loved every minute of it. I've also played through a remastered Monkey Island recently and that was awesome too. I'd love a remastered Soul Reaver now please!

I kinda need a PS3 to have BC, as even the slim version is still a big box (no room for it and a PS2), and I've no intention of getting rid of some absolutely brilliant PS2 games :)
