The previous ATI chip was oh so reliable...however, there was some bad blood between MS & Nvidia over the previous Xbox so I don't think MS had any choice in the matter.

IME their lower-range cards over the years have been friggin' awful all round, from the hardware/software to the drivers and updates

They're cheap, but that's about it.

Exactly, I can game on a budget. My 4870 when new was streets ahead of Nvidia on price/performance.

Hardly, marginally faster than the 192 core GTX 260, but slower than the 216 core one. They needed two GPU's together to compete with the 285. Yeah, it was cheaper but it sounded like a Dyson and ran hotter. Likewise the 4890 is slower than the 275 and still didn't compete with the 285. They caught a break on the 58 series, but Fermi looks better on paper.

And those cards cost an arm, leg and the shirt off my back until Nvidia were forced to drop prices. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/graphics ... on-hd-4870
