Hey all, after a bit of help. Trawled the t'interweb but to no avail with this specific problem.

Anyhoo, first things first, CPU, GPU temps fine, ram, HDD fine. Criysis patches and hotfix installed, latest Catalyst drivers. Phenom II 940, 4870 512mb, 4mb RAM, W7 64 bit (nothing overclocked BTW).

The problem, well, Crysis runs as smooth as anything all details set on High. It is a lovely thing. However, for some reason, when finishing levels it for no apparent reason crashes to desktop when it should jump to the loading screen for the next level.

Now, this doesn't always happen, it doesn't happen to every level, sometimes a level will end and load the next fine and then the same level may have a problem on a re-run. I've deleted all but 2 savegames as per whatever suggestions I could find on the internet but it's still doing it.

Oh, this can happen after a long time of playing or straight after booting up.

Any ideas much appreciated. :D

It has always been rock-solid for me, but there's a couple of differences in my setup.

Crytek abandoned Crysis before W7 came out and whilst it is basically Vista, there are subtle differences, and there are are quite a few results if you google Crysis CTD Windows 7 so there could well be something in that.

It's also worth checking the release notes of your current GPU drivers, there may be an "unresolved issue" there somewhere.

Does running it in Vista or XP compatibility mode make any difference?

Thanks for that Gav.

Aye, I had just tried running in Vista compatability - no joy, still the same error.
I then tried XP compatability, that made it even worse as it would not load.

Now, the only thing left... Well, I tried booting up from the other shortcut, just Crysis, not Crysis64. I presume that's either/and the 32bit/DX9 version. Loaded the save just prior to the end of the level went to the end and the end sequence/load page worked straight away. Then, once in the next level, saved, exit and quit and loaded it back up via Crysis64.

Now whether this is a coincidence or not I don't know. I think this may be a work around though as I have also noticed with W7 and Crysis64 that it never exits properly, it always crashes to desktop, whereas on the 32bit/DX9? version the exit worked perfectly although there were other, different, gremlins on the load/save and options pages.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions Gav, hopefully this work around will keep me going. I'll let you know.

Cheers Geiseric, I've already got the 1.2 patch and the 1.21 hotfix. :?

I guess it may just be a W7 thing? I'll try with this workaround tomorrow and see if it works on the other levels. I'll just be happy to have something that will work even if it is a bit of a faff.

Thankfully, when in a level it runs like a dream.

Well there is your problem right there :P

Have you tried to run Crysis in compatability mode for Vista SP2?

I don't have issues running it on my pc (Q9300, 8gb ram, 4870, Win 7 Pro 64bit)

Yup, no joy.

Maybe the game just detects more than one item owned by AMD/ATi and makes it angry. :D

Even if my workaround works it's still going to bug me.

V64 throws up a StackHash error when it crashes to desktop. Is that down to an access issue? I know I can only get Crysis to run as Administrator.

Ah, there may be another thing worth looking at. When I had Vista on the machine I used to get hangs trying to install it (Vista), very temperamental, and the source of the problem was the DVD player. I resolved that by updating its firmware and never saw the problem again. I may have a look to see if they've updated the firmware again, since W7 came out, it's not the best DVD player TBH.

** edit: Further to the StackHash error I had a trawl through the incident reports and all of the Crysis64 crashes appear to realte to windows\system32ntdll.dll (?). Have to do a bit of trawling later on... :?

Update: Well, I got to the end of Assault again, headed to the tanks, waited for the cutscene and it crashed.

Went back in via the 32bit Crysis (which worked on another level), and it was even weirder. On one of the pre saves I went to the tanks and they wouldn't talk or anything to trigger the end of level and on a slightly earlier save the tanks weren't even there!

Hm, maybe I may need to just try an uninstall, reinstall.

Don't take this the wrong way, but this is a genuine DVD copy yes?

Fair enough question Gav.

Aye, it's part of Crysis Maximum that I got several months ago now. Validated online ok.

Well, still on the Assault level. Funny, didn't really give me much trouble first time round.

Anyway, various trawl backs to other savegames and weird things happen. The weirdest is if I go back just prior to calling in the airsrtike on the ship.

Sometimes the airstrike comes, boat sinks, but then some of the planes are just stuck in the air. I can move about no problem myself. Other times I just keep getting told I'm too close and the airstrike won't come. Sometimes it works but the helicopter doesn't appear. Other times the helicopter comes, I go to meet the tanks and he won't speak to me. Other times still it all goes through, tunnel entrance blown clear but then it crashes when trying to get to the screen to load the next level.

:?

Anyways, I may switch off the UAC and do a fresh install. Does anyone know many installs can you do with Crysis, or is it unlimited if you just uninstall correctly?
