Ugh...

Just having a huge debate about it on the ebuyer forums...

I was really surprised at how many people thought that piracy was now the solution.

Can anyone say "loss of sales" or "PR disaster"?

And what about the southern hemisphere? If its not enough that the Aussies have half the decent games banned outright, now the ones they CAN get are unplayable due to their tinny old skool telegraph lines!

Now this is the sort of game that apeals to me. However in Oz I have used mobile broadband as it was the best option for my residential circumstances, and that I would spend up to 11 days at a time out at sea.

At the best of times on land the connection was, lets call it intermittent. At sea it would be non-existent.

In my 20+ years of gaming I've seen all the different ways of protecting software, but this just stinks.

My solution is incredibly simple

Spend the money I was going to spend on it (360 version, not getting until a GOTY due to the mandatory DLC to access more of the game) and spend it on another product that doesnt screw users.

The 'piracy because they are draconian' is a piss poor argument for people that would pirate anyway regardless of the DLC and are irritated it will take longer before they get their precious cracks

I dont agree with piracy so any comments I make are certainly not in support of such activities. Just wanted that to be clear.

The thing I really hate about any DRM is that the only people it affects is the buying public. It doesnt affect pirates as the games are cracked within hours (sometimes before) of being released. No amount of DRM has stopped this. If people want to play the game without playing for it then they will. So what exactly is DRM stopping? I guess you could argue limited activations affects the 2nd hand market for PC games? But is that what DRM was intended to do. I thought it was to stop piracy! I guess the only thing DRM stops as opposed to buying a legal copy of a game is online play which leads me onto the next part...

Why the hell should you have to connect to the internet to play a single player portion of a game? WTF is that all about.

Thankfully I do less and less gaming on the PC nowadays (I cant remember the last time I turned it on and did anything other than photo editing to be honest) so DRM is not so much an issue for me. I 99% of my gaming on the Xbox.

See I think the DRM needs to be taken into consideration and to be treated as a negative thing, as such there should be a positive incentive.

Things such as activation revoking or a resale are mandatory as are incentives for PC gamers to get the game such as exclusives for the PC market, possibly shared with the PS3 (for example the youtube feature in Just Cause 2 on the PS3 where you can upload a video direct to share something cool you did), or a free DLC

I have to say the only time I am getting a PC game is when it's a game that should be on the PC (Sup Com 2 for instance) or when the price is a lot less than that of consoles. However with the current trend of console games dropping below £20 weeks after release.

Ubi defends Assassin's Creed 2 DRM

Quote:
Ubisoft has responded to PC Gamer's report that Assassin's Creed II PC requires a constant internet connection to be played.

Explaining how the system works on the event of a disconnection occurs, the publisher told Ars Technica: "As long as you do not quit the game, the game will continue to try to reconnect for an unlimited time. Once the game is able to reconnect, you will immediately be returned to your game.

"Where exactly you are reconnected in the game may differ from title to title." It went on to say, explaining that Settlers 7 slaps you right back where you left off while Assassin's Creed 2 puts you back to the most recent checkpoint - not the last autosave.

It also said that this only occurs when the disconnection is of a notable length. Momentary disconnections that only last for a second or two will simply cause the game to pause and then resume play as normal. "Our online services platform will require a maximum of 50kbps of available bandwidth, so even with the slowest connection, gameplay won't be affected," it added.

It still shouldn't need to connect to the net!

Post subject:  Re: Assassin's Creed II PC requires net connection

The game should "only pause" when there's a momentary disconnection, and as long as I don't quit the game I can enjoy this pause for an unlimited time while it tries to reconnect.

Wow! Gee, thanks Ubisoft, I feel so privileged! How considerate of you!

Stuff your game up your arse.

i was about to pass this game by as "meh", but now i think i hate it

DNW DRM, id rather have in-game advertising, thus making the game free for everyone, than some over-bearing anti-piracy program.

Anyone know if the PS3 version will have similar issues? My net connection csn be dodgy and this seems to be more of a router issue.

As others have said, if I were a hardcore PC gamer and really wanted this game I would either pirate it or download a crack to bypass the crazy DRM.

From previous threads I imagine you were going to anyway, with or without DRM
