Has anybody repaired a Xbox 360 with the red ring of death? From what I've quickly read on the net it appears to be the GPU overheating and the solution is to reseat the heat-sink with fresh thermal compound. Anybody got any advice or experience on this subject? |

I've got a mate who used to do it all the time - he seems to have stopped recently. I think the consoles are failing less often? He has told me it's a really simple job. I would imagine that the hardest part is opening up the damn thing without breaking a clip or something. |

Yeah, I fix loads of 360s. I'm actually doing quite well out of it to be honest, it's paying better than my real job  It's a piece of piss to do. You need a few specialist tools and a bit of nous, but it takes me about half an hour to fix one. If you read a guide somewhere on the net, you'll be able to pick it up easily and do it yourself.

He told me there are loads of reasons the 360 can red ring. He says the most common one is three of the four lights glowing red, and that is the one that can normally be fixed with thermal paste - he reckons CPU is more common than GPU though? But he says when ever he opens a console he just whacks some paste on both. Apparently there are literally dozens of reasons they can red ring though, and if it's just one light flashing red you can use the eject key to find an error code to tell you exactly which component has failed. Bally - that's the same as I'm hearing - that it's easy to do but a while ago when it was a really common problem you could make a tidy sum out of it. |

How old is it and which red lights flash? a red ring means a lot of different things depending on the code being given and if it's the common one of general hardware failure MS upped the guarantee to 3 years on them so you could get a free repair if you haven't voided the warranty |
