Hi,

I recently moved from BT to Vodafone, as they said I could get the same speed, (76 Mbits/s) for about £20 a month less than I was paying.

After transferring, I seem to be stuck on about 39Mbps, according to speedtest.net, but the router page tells me that I'm getting 75.53 Mbit/s

I have tried a few different speed check sites, and I have tried it on two PCs in the house, both cabled and when no other devices are connected, and I'm still getting just under 40 meg from the various speed checker sites.

Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting such a big difference in download speed reports?

Thanks in advance,

John.

Have you spoken to Vodafone? It could be a problem on the line somewhere or possibly a higher than advertised contention.

Is it the same router?

Just done a speed test on mine with BT. I usually get 70+ meg but currently it's fluctuating between 8 and 15. Could be that it's bank holiday Monday and more people are using the line in your area than usual.

Test again in the week.

Thanks for the comments.

This has been going on since I switched, in November. I spoke to Vodafone, who told me that the speed should climb within 10 days. I phoned them after a couple of weeks, and they eventually admitted that they had put me on the wrong package, and promised that it would be corrected within 1 working day. That was a couple of weeks ago. If this is a contention issue, I'll have to look at my options regarding a move back to BT, as I never had any issues with them, speed wise.

I'll keep trying to get through to Voda on the chat-help thing, and will kepp you updated on my progress.

Vodafone have just suggested power cycling the router. I'll try that.

Edit to add: Just tried it, and the speed has gone up to 70Mbps. I'll monitor the situation, but it seems that all I needed to do was disregard Voda's initial instructions, which were to NOT power cycle the router, and it is now looking quite healthy.

Thanks, again, for your advice, Oli.

The router is connected at 75.53mbps in all probability (assuming they haven't fixed the router to lie), but that has absolutely nothing to do with how fast you can get data from websites.

That comes down to how many other people are on the network are how much data is passing over the transit points between Vodafone's network, BT's backbone (I assume it is over OpenReach or whatever the BT wholesale arm is called) and the Tier 1 Internet backbone.

In all probability, if you could find a "local" (i.e. on the Vodafone segment where you are), then you would get the full speed, but the speed test websites are all on the WWW and have to pass throught BT's and Vodafone's gateways, which is where the bottlenecks will be.

Edit: The powercycling probably forced it to renegotiate, so if they had you on the wrong package, it would force it to get a new connection and possibly update its configuration. But the absolute speed you can achieve on downloading is as above and doesn't have much to do with you local connection speed - although that would dictate the absolute maximum possible.

Apologies for the delay in replying, Dave, I've only just noticed your post...

It's been a few months now, and the speed has been at a steady 80 meg since my previous post. It seems that it was purely down to Vodafone putting me on the wrong package.

Oh well, it works now. :)
