Does anyone have any experience with these things? I need a scanner for work and the last time I saw one was 10yrs ago. Can't spend a fortune, definitely under £100 hopefully less. It's mostly for documents, but photos and other things would be great. I don't want crappy software either. Ideas?

Windows 7 or Windows Vista then, the built in scanning software is adequate...
As to hardware, how much do you need to scan and how often? The odd letter or two every month or all-day-every-day?
Do you need sheet fed scanning (i.e. scanning long documents)?
Do you need duplex scanning (i.e. double sided scanning)?
If you just need it for the odd page every now and then, then something like the Canon LiDE series is okay. Otherwise look at HP or Epson.
If you need something fast or you need to scan multiple page documents, then you aren't really going to come in under 100 quid.
I'm currently looking at the combo devices from HP (OfficeJet 8n00 series) and Canon (MX870).
At work, we still have a fleet of HP SJ5950 scanners, which are pretty good, have a document feeder and duplex ability, plus an adapter for negatives/slides. But that comes in at several hundred Euros.

Thanks Dave. One of my machines is XP, the other two are 7. Have to figure that out I suppose. I'll have a look at HP and Epson and see what I can come up with.

I bought a fairly cheap Canon and it does the job. Its powered through the USB and is very slim. I think it might be the previous version of this one or maybe the Lide 200 (I'm at work so cant check!) _________________Twitter Blogflickr

I have an Epson v300 Photo which has a transparency scanner as well. It’s mains powered, and connects via USB2. It’s a pretty good scanner. Cost under £100 from Tesco.

I got a refurbished MFP on eBay for £40 - HP 2575 and it's really good for the money. It's even got LAN onboard which is handy. The scan and print quality is excellent for documents, and relatively quick. I've not done either for photos - but that's not what I do.  So yeah - check eBay for refurbs.  _________________

I've had two Epson scanners and they both suffered lamp problems. I've since moved to a Canon 4400F and so far it's been faultless and a doddle to use. I don't think it's made any more, but if you want something for infrequent use, have a look at the LiDE 100 for £52.

Hmmm..... eBay could be interesting, but I doubt work would go for that. It's really more of a document thing and it seems the sub-£100 units are very much "home"/photo oriented.
