Veteran rock band AC/DC's latest release has beaten Paul Weller's Wake Up the Nation in a closely fought battle to the top of the album charts.

The mid-week official chart update on Wednesday had shown Weller was just in the lead by 3,000 copies.

But in the end it was AC/DC's soundtrack to the forthcoming Iron Man 2 movie that triumphed.

The album features 15 classic AC/DC songs selected from 10 of the band's studio albums from 1976 to 2008.

The pole position in the chart gives the band their 10th top 10 and third UK number one album.

Meanwhile the number two place for Weller means the singer has now notched up 12 top 10 albums as a solo artist, adding to the 11 he had while with The Jam and five with Style Council.

Gennaro Castaldo of retailer HMV said earlier in the week: "The thing that's most important is that, while both acts have very dedicated followings, their music is now being picked up and enjoyed by a whole new generation of fans."

Other new entries to the album chart top 10 were Kate Nash's My Best Friend, straight in at number eight, and Meat Loaf's Hang Cool Teddy at number four.

In the singles chart, X Factor 2008 semi-finalist Diana Vickers earned her first number one with debut single Once.

Vickers was signed by RCA records in March but has delayed the launch of her pop career because she was starring in the West End production of Little Voice.

Her debut album Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree follows next month.

Chipmunk's new single Until You Were Gone featuring Esmee Denters entered the chart at number three.

Tina Turner's The Best went straight in at number nine. The song originally peaked at number five when it was first released in 1989.

Its revival has been supported by a Facebook campaign by fans of Glasgow Rangers football club to celebrate Rangers' record-breaking 53rd Scottish Premier League title.

I've got it, great selection of their songs, and it must effectively be one of the most promoted albums ever :D

Good to see Meatloaf and Turner back in the charts too. Lol, I wonder what those two would sound like singing together...

Why? Do people not already have all those AC/DC tracks? Is there any new material on that Iron Man 2 album?
I've heard a couple of tracks off Paul Weller's new effort and I quite like them.

Old stuff, but I don't care for a number of reasons:

It'll maybe get people interested in the older albums, tours, whatever.

The deluxe CD pack is great ;)

The track list is well thought out and arranged.

AC/DC deserve to be top of the charts :D

I hope the song Iron Man by Black Sabbath is in the film.

It was. Not all of it and I think it was right at the end, which I thought was an incredibly missed opportunity.
