3rd and 1st class

He wasn’t even in 3rd class - he was travelling steerage. It’s an interesting look at how the two worlds clash and the attitudes of many of the protagonists towards each other. Ignoring the central two characters, the social strata packed into a single boat and how that starts to break down in the time of a crisis is fascinating. Usually social classes were not that close together.

It is fascinating what happens.

Quote:
When the Titanic hit an iceberg four days into her maiden voyage to New York, on April 14, 1912, the maritime maxim of “women and children first” was famously obeyed. Young men aged between 16 and 35 were the least likely to be among the 706 survivors, while women and children were the most likely to be saved.

A different story played out, however, when the Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat off Ireland on May 7, 1915. Then, the majority of the survivors were young men and women — fit people in their prime who could fight their way on to the lifeboats.

As the Titanic sank more slowly, there was time to put pressure on men and lower-class passengers to give way to women, children and the upper classes, and even the opportunity for the crew to enforce this physically.

From here.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Wasn't Kate naked (or at least her body double) in Titanic? I can't remember, the rest of the film was that bad

Didn’t they find some of the gates to the lower decks locked on the TItanic? That would have stopped the riff-raff from getting to the lifeboats. I know it was a scene in the film.

That does sound familiar, but I wonder if the history I can recall has been tainted by the movie. :?

I think that it was a pretty orderly evacuation. No pushing and shoving. I think that some Americans did ignore the women and children first protocol but the brits were pretty decent to a man. The band played on as long as possible.

The evacuation on Titanic may have been more orderly (at least at first), but given the Lusitania sank in just 15 minutes I'm not surprised the more fit and able were more likely to survive.

That's not to say the evacuation of Titanic was not without its problems - not only were First and Second Class passengers invited to alight first, but many foreign crew members, such as the Italian kitchen staff were locked in their places of work/cabins to stop them escaping.

Also the lifeboats were initially launched mostly empty in order for them to row back and pick up survivors after the ship had gone down, yet only one boat actually returned.

And history records that Murdoch went down with the ship, he didn't commit suicide.

... So taking into account the original was a crap film, has anyone any valid argument for watching it in 3D? Tits and propeller-aerobatics aside, that is. ;-)
