Yes bit what about roaming costs by Uk users in Europe or further afield?

AFAIK it's free globally, I assume Amazon has put the policies in place.

I cant see Vodafone giving up a large slice of business like that. It would be like admitting that they are over charging for data.

What do you mean? Amazon probably pays Vodafone a fixed fee (probably per annum) per UK Kindle device sold.

Yes but these devices will be taken abroad and will incur roaming charges. They could also be bought by nationals of other countries to be taken abroad, just like many UK citizens bought US kindles.

No roaming costs on the wi-fi version, or there didn't use to be, they use an AT&T SIM card and use their partners worldwide, but the costs are absorbed by Amazon and AT&T at the moment, AFAIK, at least for book downloads.

There are no roaming charges! That's because Amazon has made agreements with network providers beforehand so providers KNOW and agree that Kindle users will be using their networks. All Kindles will be exactly the same, there won't be difference between the one sold to american and the one sold to british. Network won't know which Kindle was made where and it won't even care. It will just give all the data it need for free.

Quote:
Wireless Access With Whispernet

Get Books in as Little as 60 Seconds
Whispernet utilises Amazon's optimised technology plus a high-speed data network to enable you to wirelessly search, discover, and download content on the go. Your books and periodicals are delivered via Whispernet in less than 60 seconds. Wireless download times can vary based on 3G or EDGE/GPRS coverage, signal strength, and file size.

No Monthly Wireless Bills
No monthly wireless bills or commitments. Amazon pays for Kindle's wireless connectivity so you won't see a monthly wireless bill. There is no wireless setup – you are ready to shop, purchase, and read straight out of the box.

Your Kindle may use wireless connectivity to make other services available, such as wireless delivery of personal documents, which may require an additional charge.

Global 3G Coverage
Travel the globe and still get books in under 60 seconds. Kindle uses GSM technology — the most popular mobile wireless standard — with wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, such as Australia, Hong Kong, Germany, Japan, Norway, Spain, South Africa, the United States and many others. Stay in touch with news from home by having your newspaper and magazine subscriptions delivered wirelessly while you travel.

Kindle is not a phone. When you buy a phone from Vodafone, they assume you are going to use on Vodafone UK network 99.999% of the time so Vodafone won't negotiate better price/make agreements with other providers abroad.

With Kindle, assumption is that people will use it on ALL networks around the world where agreements ware made so it is not really roaming because agreements were made before specifically so Amazon gets better prices for data.

Amazon will pay wholesale prices for data everywhere, not roaming prices.

Fine if that is the case it begs another question. If Amazon can do that why can't the telcos negotiate the same deals for its customers? It does make the whole roaming system a scam.
