Can anyone with an iPhone 4 please test this out.
I am on version 4.0.1 so you may need to be on the same.
Anyway, go to iPod and pick an album and start playing it not shuffled.
Then press the home button and then the sleep button.
Now double press the home button and pause the music.
Now unlock the phone and double press the home button and go to the music controls bit.
On my phone they are now "greyed out". It says the name of the song but the controls are inactive. Similarly, if I now lock the phone I can't access the music controls by double pressing the home button.
I have to go into iPod to start the music playing again.

OK, further investigation leads me to believe that an app is causing it.
I'll let you know when I find which one it is.

Sounds like quite a convoluted way to find a bug.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Boom!
Hipstamtic.
Anyone who has Hipstamatic.
Close all apps on your phone.
Now start the iPod app and start playing a song.
Press the home button.
Check you can control the music when the phone is locked and from the shortcut bar.
Now start Hipstamatic.
Now go back to the shortcut bar.
Controls are greyed out. Also you can't access the music controls from the locked screen.

How else would you find a bug? Surely part one is to check that it reoccurs on your own phone and on other people's phones?

I'd say the basic approach to filing a bug report is something like: - Reproduce Bug
- Minimise steps to reproduce (ie. find out where exactly the bug is)
- Rule out environmental issues(eg. by testing on other phones)

Pretty much what I did Reported it to hipstamatic as a ten step instruction to replicate it. Like so... 1. Quit all apps using the shortcut bar (just to show it is hipstamatic doing this) 2. Start iPod app and start playing some music. 3. Press the home button and lock the phone (to check music controls still work). 4. Also check music controls work from shortcut bar. 5. Make sure music is still playing. 6. Start Hipstamatic. 7. Now press the home button and lock the phone. 8. Double tap home button and pause the music. 9. Unlock the phone. 10. Double tap home and go to music controls shortcut bar.

I hate the multi-tasking! I have some apps, which CAN run with the iPod in the background, but if I have started them at some point, without the iPod playing in the background, they stop the iPod app! I then have to go back to the home screen, call up the multi-tasking list, kill the app, restart the iPod app playing and then restart the app I wanted! I wish there was a way to turn off the bloody multi-tasking!
