He’s going out on a limb here - he reckons that in two years time, 3D will not be the movie staple; it will be on the decline. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/ ... of_3d.htmlAnd here is his reply with responses from the public. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/markkermode/ ... plies.html

As some of the replies say to Dr K say, I am really bored of hearing this discussed on the radio broadcast week after week. Personally I'm all for 3D but a glut of poor post-3D (or 2.5D) films will probably kill it all off anyway along with the high ticket prices. Hollywood will do anything to cover over the fact that they can barely come up with 5 films a year that aren't remakes or reboots from old TV shows and while 3D is popular they'll use it whether it's appropriate or not. Hardly going out on a limb, I'd have thought. If, say, The Hobbit were to be made in 3D, I'm sure that would add a couple more years of life to the 3D fad.

There's a few big 3D releases planned in the next year to 18 months. TRON : Legacy at the end of this year and then the two Alien prequels. These films are going to be big money spinners for Hollywood. Mark

At the moment, the 3D kit is in short supply and in high demand. So the studios are filming in using normal kit and using software to add 3D to the films. This is problematic as films made in 2D don’t respect the problems that 3D presents. These problems can be overcome with careful directing, longer time between edits and better lighting.

Ironic really, because at the consumer level it's exactly the opposite... Jon

TRON : Legacy and The Alien prequels are films that will be or were shot using 3D. Not simply 2D with 3Dification. Mark

Indeed - and that’s being rushed out so that people have something 3D to play on their 3D TVs. The real, hard core studio quality 3D cameras are very, very expensive, very specialist and very rare. This is the stuff you’d really want to play with.

I think that even with more 3D cameras available the audiences may simply get bored with the over use of the technology especially if you need glasses. Holographic projection could solve that problem, but that is not viable yet.

Personally I find 3D a distraction. Looking round the corner to see the scene built up of distinct layers does nothing for the story and everything to take my mind off the dross I am being fed. It's just smoke and mirrors, leave it and make good films with good scripts. I hope Kermode wins this.
