I have two spare slots in my MacPro. Methinks I could get two and RAID them together - using one as a backup for the other.

I didn't even know there was a Spinpoint F4 drive. I certainly didn't know it would be 5400rpm, and claim to outperform 7200rpm drives.

This really makes me mad. eBuyer was the worst offender for me. If you can get this drive on Amazon that may be a good option. Mark

Quite! I would seriously consider one of these if somebody could tell me that it was as quick as my F1s or the newer F3s. I've been waiting for Samsung to make something bigger than a 1TB for a while.

I mean with a replacement for the excellent F3 Ernie, not a load of Eco slow nonsense. Anybody can duff those things out.

RAID is not a backup. A RAID mirror is only designed to reduce or eliminate down-time in the event of drive failure. It's completely useless if your filing system becomes corrupted or if files are deleted through accident or malintent*; it simply reproduces the catastrophe faithfully to both drives. It's also useless in the event of a power surge, theft or physical trauma which destroys both drives, since they are electrically and physically co-located. Your data is far safer if you have one drive internally, and back it up regularly to an external device. Of course, a mirror and a backup is better still. *Is that a word now?

You mentioned your F1s, for all I know the newer eco jobs are as good in average day to day use (depends what you want 'em for obviously).

But that's the thing innit? We don't know. I have larger quantities of media (a fair amount of it is lossless or HD) than most people and I wanna know that these things cut the mustard before I purchase. Nobody's reviewed anything this big yet....

It's got a higher aerial density so it should be faster at a slower speed. I might grab 5 to test out on my SAN

I'd be interested to see the results. The F3 has an areal density of 500GB per platter and spins at 7200rpm. The F4 has an areal density of 667GB per platter and spins at 5400rpm. So, the F3 spins 33% faster and the F4 has a 33% areal density advantage. I can see it turning out a decent performance, maybe even on par, but faster? I find that hard to accept. I'd like to be wrong though, I love the Spinpoints - I have a couple of F1s and an F3.

I did look at it and thought 'Ooh, good value'. Then thought 'what the hell would I use it for, given that I've failed to even fill a 500GB drive'.
