Maybe it was suicide pigeons who were radicalised and trained to fly into jet engines?
Rolls Royce plan for such things. That's why they fire dead chickens into their engines to test them. To pass the test any damage has to be contained within the engine housing. Apparently today it was uncontained.

I must say Rolls Royce haven't been doing their reputation much good recently. It was a design flaw with their engine that brought down that Boeing 777 at Heathrow the other year, now this happens. They could easily scare customers away to General Electric.

Well it turns out to have been a component failure. So Rolls had better improve Quailty control quickly.

Screw security. They should ban phones on planes to make it more plesant for other people.

Can they do over 18 flights only as well? :? :D

I do not fly often but I would like to access the internet on a flight. As for keeping planes pleasant why not ban alcohol. It is always drunks who cause trouble, apart from terrorists of course. Plus make airlines give nicotine patches to all passengers who request one for the duration of the flight. That will keep them calm.

One component, out of how many engines in service? Let's not blow this out of proportion. Besides, that particular A380 still had 3 other engines to fly with, it's not like it suffered a fiery ending.

Yes it could probably have flown all the way to the final destination without any problem, even if another engine failed. It would not worry me, but then the average passenger has absolutely no idea of the redundancy built into the airframe.

I understand the A380 is designed to be able to fly on two working engines...
