I did consider Wordpress, but I didn't feel geeky enough to tailor it to my taste. I accept it's very powerful, and often supplied as standard with most hosting accounts.
I suppose what we're really talking about is a content management system rather than a blog as such. Wordpress and similar perform both functions. I just find Posterous so simple to set up and use, I find I recommend it whenever I can if someone wants a lightweight blogging system.
Both Wordpress and Posterous have plenty of free templates available, and both let you tweak stuff, even design your own if you want.
