When my grandfather died in the 1980s, his second wife said that a lot of money was held in trust for myself, my sister and my mother, and she said that when she died, we’d be very wealthy.
She died in December. We’re not going to be very wealthy because all the money went on nursing home fees. So no loafing around in abject luxury for the rest of my life.
Arse.

Yes, it is sad and shocking to see how quickly nursing home fees can chew up money in this way.

If it was left in trust to you, how did it go to pay her nursing fee's?

I don’t know how it worked or how things were set up in the 1980s. I guess I can ask my mum that question next time I speak to her - but right now she’s also got my grandma to worry about. The bummer is that the money has gone.

Are you sure there was no trickery involved ie she told you this crap and went on a spending spree herself?
Or was it a case of she thought not a lot would be spent on nursing home and the lion's share would be heading your way?
Nursing homes are frikking expensive. Even if you go into one courtesy of the NHS, they make you sell your car and own home before they front up the cash (may be wrong on this but it's the impression I get).
I've been to one nursing home in a posh area. Works out to about £500,000/yr for them to look after you, so you can imagine it's an impressive place. Beautifully built. Lavish furniture. Big wooden plaque with your name engraved on a gold plate outside your door. En suite in every room. You can imagine the kind of thing I'm talking about. Even when I stepped in, I thought "Wow! Wouldn't mind living here!". Then I see how it's run. How nurses are leaving. The carers hate it. Costs are being cut left, right and centre. Then I realised I'd rather just shoot myself than live there.

Yup. You have to sell off your assets and use a majority of them before the NHS will spend a penny on your home. A certain well known private healthcare provider charges approx £1000 a week for their homes. The food budget (that's 3 meals per day, with multiple courses & tea etc) is less that £4 per person per day

You would have been wealthy if you owned the nursing home.

She was never expected to have lived that long. She had MS quite badly, and it got worse as she got older. I guess nursing homes wasn’t in the game plan when my grandfather died.

There is (or was) a woman who lived aboard the QE2. She said that it was far cheaper than a nursing home and more fun as she got to see the world. OK she still had her “Marbles” and was reasonably mobile but as she said she could have everything delivered to her cabin and a whole staff to look after her. As she was on board all the time she became well known to all the crew Sounds like a good plan to me
