0/0 depending on your method of calculation will give a different answer depending on what you do

0/0 in computer programming will usually give a NAN (Not a number) exception

0/0 could cause a divide by 0 exception leading to infinity
however as there are 0 0 x infinity = 0

0/0 is technically 1 as any number divided by itself is to the power of 0 which is 1

This is one of the reasons I want to go back to do a course in maths, is things like this interest me, especially now having more of a computer programming knowledge

I always thought that 0 x infinite = 1, or at least that's what the maths teacher said, I think.

Well maths dictates if you have nothing of something you have nothing

the 0 x infinity probably came from some association in 0/0 = 0^0

and y^0 = 1

Infinity is not a number, so rules of arithmetic tend to go wrong. There's a reason calculators just give up when you divide by zero.

The following is not a valid argument:

If x = y / z then zx = y

anything over zero = infinity, therefore, Letting z = 0 gives x = infinity

Now let y = "your mum's apple pie"

We now have:

zx = y gives:

0 x infinity = "your mum's apple pie".

Additionally, there are different kinds of infinity. Some are bigger than others. The two most discussed categories are "countable" and "uncountable".

This thread has at last cleared something up for me. I was taught bomdas and was always confused as to why everybody else said bodmas. My teacher said it didn't matter which one you used and google wasn't invented to clarify. Then I forgot I ever cared.

I recall in maths in my first year of uni, my crazy maths teacher was asked "How much is infinity", she replied "It depends what kind of infinity you're talking about", then went off on a tangent...

She did things like that from time to time...

Well, her answer was technically correct (which is the best kind of correct) but not terribly helpful.

For those interested in the different sizes of infinity, here's an article:
