Fresh timber for preference. However, we live in a 'smoke-free zone' so we actually use gas.

Very true. If just for me I will go with the trusty old George Foreman grill.

Lumpwood charcoal, but I'm not anti gas. Briquettes are the devil's own work though. Haven't voted as I'm on tapatalk.

The barbecue flavour comes from the light smoking of the meat from the fat burning on the coals. As a gas barbecue does this perfectly well, I have no issue with them. I always think that anti gas people have never used one as I used to be like that until I did and then I was converted. The only reason I don't have a gas one is that lumpwood doesn't cost as much in the short term.

I voted gas. It's quick, easy and reliable.
Barbecues are as much about socialising, or the occasion, as they are about cooking. As long as the food is cooked properly, it doesn't matter. There always seems to be a lot of snobbery around the subject, for which I have little time for.

Another good thing about a gas bbq is being able to do sausages and bacon for breakfast.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
