I think I prefer glossy, just because it seems crisper and films look great, tbh though it's not worth worrying about, it's not like anyone likes working in direct sunlight for prolonged periods, most of the time the laptop will be in the shade/soft lighting.

Jon Honeyball's last word column in the latest issue of PCPro is about glossy vs Matte screens.
His contention is that the position of the reflections in a glossy screen (essentially not in the same plane as your are focusing on) means that the brain finds it very easy to filter out the effect. Worth a read if you're passing a newsagents and have a spare 5 minutes.

I can't say I'm convinced myself and prefer a nice matte screen. Largely seems to come down to personal preference (unless you are the German HSE of course).

I've had to work on a few glossy screens and the old CRT monitors were glossy anyway. I never managed to comfortably focus through the reflections. Even on out flat screen TV, I can see reflections when it is sunny outside and I end up watching the reflections, not what is being shown. Some brains might be able to filter out the effect, but mine focuses on the effect.

I have the same problem with background sound, I cannot filter it out and if somebody talks to me in a room with background music or conversation, I'll probably only hear a third of what they are trying to say. It is even worse when they are speaking German.
